European Antibiotic Awareness Day partners with World Antibiotic Awareness Week
On 16-22 November, the World Health Organization (WHO) will organise the first World Antibiotic Awareness Week with the slogan “Antibiotics: Handle with Care”. The campaign calls on individuals, governments, and health and agriculture professionals to urgently take action to address antibiotic resistance.
European Antibiotic Awareness Day (EAAD), the European health initiative coordinated by ECDC to raise awareness about prudent use of antibiotics, provides a platform and support for national campaigns. Each year since 2008, European countries have organised national activities to mark EAAD on 18 November. This year, EAAD is partnering with World Antibiotic Awareness Week and will contribute to increasing global awareness about antibiotic resistance and the need for prudent use of antibiotics.
To mark the first World Antibiotic Awareness Week, ECDC will coordinate a "24-hour Global Twitter conversation" on 18 November, with the participation of WHO (Headquarters in Geneva, Regional Office for Europe and other Regional Offices) and EAAD partner organisations from Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand and the United States.
