Michelle patient story

Michelle, is 23 years old and in her spare time she enjoys gaming, reading, and writing poetry. Besides family, friends and loving partner, her two cats and a hamster fill her days with comfort and companionship.

Rosa EAAD patient story

When Rosa was 6 weeks old, an apparently simple respiratory infection turned out to be a multidrug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae infection. This resulted into three long years of surgical interventions, rehabilitation and uncertainty about her future. 

Gavin EAAD patient story

Gavin, 26 years old, is a haemodialysis patient with chronic kidney disease. For him, the resistant infections became worse than the kidney disease itself. 

Yira EAAD patient story

A multidrug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae infection left Yira, a patient with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, in constant pain as the the infection impacts nearly every aspect of her life.

Areti was just 13 years old when she was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, a cancer of the white blood cells. During her cancer treatment, she developed an infection with Klebsiella, a difficult-to-treat bacterium, which had developed resistance to most broad-spectrum antibiotics.

Mohammed - Patient stories

Cancer chemotherapy had weakened Mohammed’s immune system, allowing an infection with a highly resistant type of E. coli to take hold. His doctors were able to successfully treat him with last-line antibiotics.

Paolo - Patient story

Paolo fell ill with a serious urinary tract infection with an E. coli resistant to many antibiotics. It took two months and three courses of different antibiotics before his infection was successfully treated.

Mallory

Mallory Smith was born with cystic fibrosis but what killed her was bacterium called Burkholderia cenocepacia. It colonised her lungs when she was only 12 years old. What followed was 13 years of antibiotic treatments that worked until the bacterium became resistant to every single medication.
