European Antibiotic Awareness Day and the global health challenges of antibiotic resistance – launch event in Brussels


The launch event of the 8th European Antibiotic Awareness Day will take place on 16 November 13:00-16:00 (CET), in Brussels.

During the event we will discuss EU-wide data on antimicrobial resistance and antimicrobial consumption, the actions undertaken in the European Union under the “One Health” approach, research and innovation for effective antimicrobial agents, the work done in the U.S. with the “Get Smart with Antibiotics” campaign and the first World Antibiotic Awareness Week (16-22 November).

The event will open with keynote speeches by Vytenis Andriukaitis (Commissioner for Health and Food Safety), Zsuzsanna Jakab (Director, WHO Regional Office for Europe) and Andrea Ammon (Acting Director, ECDC).  

A panel will follow, where Martin Seychell (Deputy Director General, DG Health and Food Safety), Ruxandra Draghia-Akli(Director of the Health Directorate, DG Research and Innovation) and Lauri Hicks (Office of Antibiotic Stewardship and Medical Director, “Get Smart: Know When Antibiotics Work” program manager, US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), will present activities undertaken by their respective institutions to combat antibiotic resistance and promote prudent use of antibiotics.

Representatives from the Standing Committee of European Doctors (CPME), the Pharmaceutical Group of the European Union (PGEU), the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (EFPIA), the European Patients’ Forum (EPF), the European Public Health Alliance (EPHA), the Joint Programming Initiative on Antimicrobial Resistance (JPIAMR), the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE), and the International Federation for Animal Health Europe (IFAH-Europe) will also take part in the event by making short pledges on how their organisations are responding to challenge posed by antibiotic resistance.
